ABOUT
We’re a coalition of community groups, water experts, businesses & nonprofits dedicated to a smart, accountable, transparent solution to New Orleans’ drainage crisis. We want to engage the citizens of Orleans parish to come together and demand change from the New Orleans city council. For the first time in New Orleans history, residents will develop all pillars of a drainage policy that seeks to directly benefit all New Orleans communities.
EQUITY
A stormwater fee generated Water Justice Fund will pave the way for equitably financed capital improvements. The Water Justice fund will provide transparency and accountability around the drainage utility, address flooding problems, and invest into more green infrastructure around the city.
TRANSPARENCY
Since May 2022, The Water Collaborative of Greater New Orleans has been leading a transparent, accessible, and inclusive process to develop a fee to fund our aging grey infrastructure system, and expand and fund our green infrastructure system to better combat the impacts of climate change and reduce the risk of neighborhood flooding. Our process is open to everyone including elected officials, residents, businesses, government agencies, water professionals, and many more.
HEALTH
Investing into Green Infrastructure provides economic benefits at both the community and household level. The degree of the benefits depends on design, installation, and maintenance.
Increased green space in urban environments can improve mental health and immune response by providing opportunity for recreation and physical activity, improving safety, promoting community identity and a sense of well-being.
TRUST BUILDING
Water Justice is the reparative work of addressing water inequities and climate change caused by privatization and divestment. Water infrastructure must be a public good and fully funded to ensure every resident, especially our most vulnerable have clean accessible, and
affordable water.
